Along with our co-author Zachary Elkins, we have celebrated the virtues of what we might call statutory constitutions: those with flexible amendment thresholds that are fairly detailed. Such constitutions have the virtue of being frequently changed through internal mechanisms, avoiding the more costly route of a total replacement. In such countries, we argue that the stakes of amendment are lower, and so cultural resistance to amendment is less than in societies where it is infrequent.

Globally, constitutional amendment is very frequent. Figure 1 a shows the number of new constitutions passed in any given year. Roughly five countries per year are writing a new constitution, but many more are engaged in amendment, as shown in Figure 1 b.

The number of constitutional amendments promulgated around the world has risen steadily since At present, approximately thirty constitutions are amended each year. One of the drivers of the increase in constitutional amendments, illustrated in Figure 1 b , is decolonization.

Many new countries were created in the s, accompanied by written constitutions, so the absolute number of texts that could potentially be amended became much larger after World War II. Furthermore, many of the initial constitutions adopted in the process of decolonization featured heavy European influence, and so led to local tailoring of the texts after independence.

However, this does not explain the continued increases in the s and s. The increases in the s and s are particularly puzzling because, at the same time when amendments were becoming more common, amendment procedures were becoming more difficult. As illustrated in Figure 2 , constitutional amendments have increasingly required approval from supermajorities in the legislature and by the electorate in referenda.

Given that the constitutional amendment procedures have grown more complicated over time, it seems unlikely that the changes we have witnessed in amendment procedures can explain the increase in amendments illustrated in Figure 1 b.

Amendment procedures that require supermajorities or referenda from — There are two other potential explanations for the trends observed in Figure 1 : either the continued increases in constitutional amendment are the result of greater secular pressures for change or, alternatively, the result of new constitutions being adopted in places and times that are somehow more open to constitutional amendment. After exploring the challenges facing researchers who seek to tie amendment procedure to the amendment rate, we go on to develop a measure of amendment culture as an alternative to institutional factors that constrain amendment.

There is tremendous variation in the amendment procedures used from one country to the next and often even across constitutions within a single country. Constitutions that require numerous political actors and high voting thresholds should be more difficult to amend and, hence, more entrenched than constitutions that lack such stringent amendment procedures. Scholars have attempted to assess this intuition by measuring the rigidity of the amendment procedure, which we will call amendment difficulty.

The idea underlying measures of amendment difficulty is deceptively simple: onerous procedures should lead to lower levels of constitutional amendment. Operationalizing these concepts is hardly straightforward, however.

The basic problem is that the comparative flexibility of the hybrid set of procedural arrangements is not obvious ex ante.

We observe many different kinds of amendment procedures involving different vote thresholds, combinations of institutions, and sequences. Consider several sources of variation:. Steps to passage. The range of different actors and steps involved in constitutional design is very great.

Bicameral and presidential systems will typically include approval by both houses of parliament or an independently elected president. In many other countries, courts have read certain provisions to be unamendable. Observed variation. We also observe tremendous variation in actual frequency of formal amendment: as mentioned above, the Constitution of Japan has never been amended; the Constitution of India adopted two years later has been amended over times. These sources of variation make development of a cross-national comparative indicator of amendment difficulty quite challenging, and perhaps even impossible, as a theoretical matter.

As long as more than one institution is involved, the relative difficulty of any alternative procedure will depend largely on the configuration of preferences rather than the institutional structure per se.

To illustrate, consider two countries with the same amendment procedure, but with different political configurations: one has a dominant political party that wants to change the constitution and is able to do so regularly, while the other features an array of small parties, most of which oppose constitutional amendment. In this example, the political configuration rather than the institutions explains the likely different outcomes. Despite the challenges to comparing institutional features across countries, there are strong reasons to try to develop a true indicator.

One is that real world constitutional designers face the challenge of writing an amendment rule. This has prompted several scholars, including ourselves, to attempt to develop such an indicator; these indicators are listed in Table 2. The remainder of this section explains the measures in Table 2 and evaluates their validity. Many of the efforts to date start with the observed rate of amendment in any given system. Like amendment difficulty, the amendment rate is a deceptively simple concept: it refers to the amount of constitutional change, or frequency of amendment, that results from formal constitutional amendments over some predetermined period of time.

The classic paper on the topic of amendment difficulty is by Donald Lutz. She restricts the analysis to the period from through However, instead of modeling all amendments as equally difficult, we assume that the first amendment passed in any given year is the most difficult. Once the constitution is amended once, such a coalition is identified and subsequent amendments are easier to promulgate. Our approach differs from Lutz primarily in that we do not treat state and national constitutions as comparable in light of their very different purposes and scope.

Instead of drawing on the observed rates of amendment from US state constitutions, we model the amendment rate as part of a larger effort to understand constitutional change. We then estimate the effects of particular amendment rules, net of other predictors. Thus, we regress the amendment rate on a set of amendment procedure variables as well as on a host of factors that should predict political reform more generally, including those factors included in our model of constitutional duration.

After estimating the model, we predict the probability of amendment by constraining all variables except those related to the amendment procedure to their mean. The resulting measure is available for all constitutions coded by the CCP. The predicted amendment rate varies from zero amendments per year to 0. Like those of Lutz and Lorenz, our measure is partly endogenous in that it relies on observed variation in amendment rates.

Unlike other measures, however, we do take into account social and political factors that are likely to put pressure on countries to amend the constitution, because we extract our coefficients from a complete model of constitutional replacement.

The earliest such measure was created by Lijphart in his comparison of the Westminster and consensus models of government. Similarly, La Porta et al. One point each is given if approval of a majority of the legislature, the head of state, or a referendum is necessary to change the constitution.

As a result, they assign a score of 2 when amendment only requires a supermajority in the legislature and 3 when only a majority is required in the legislature but multiple actors are involved in the process.

Existing measures of amendment difficulty are poorly correlated, indicating low levels of convergent validity. Table 3 presents the correlation between each combination of measures. Only three combinations yield a correlation greater than 0.

The other correlations are all smaller than 0. Typically, in political science, measures of the same concept tend to be highly correlated, which suggests a high degree of what is called convergent validity.

While the profound methodological challenges that we articulate above suggest that the standard efforts to measure amendment difficulty may never be fully adequate, the very fact that the various institutional measures are so poorly correlated suggests that they are missing something deeper.

We define amendment culture as the set of shared attitudes about the desirability of amendment, independent of the substantive issue under consideration and the degree of pressure for change. In other words, we posit a baseline level of resistance to formal constitutional change in any particular system; as this baseline level increases, the viscosity of the constitutional amendment process decreases even under identical institutional arrangements.

Conversely, the presence of amendment culture suggests that, even if institutional arrangements change, we might not observe a change in the level of demand for amendment. Consider as an example the country of Paraguay, which has had six constitutions since independence in The first did not even have an amendment procedure. However, the Constitution only requires an absolute majority in stage 2; introduces the possibility of initiatives in stage 1; and replaced the constituent assembly in stage 3 with a public referendum.

There has been at least one additional proposal under the Constitution, but it was rejected by the legislature. Why might amendment culture exist? Start with the basic intuition common to virtually all accounts of constitutionalism: barriers to amendment are not merely institutional. In these countries, we are told that political barriers to changing rules are the source of stability and that these political barriers function so well that additional institutional protections are unnecessary though, as Stephen Gardbaum has pointed out, they have been introduced to some degree in recent years.

That political constitutionalism is even a possibility in countries like the Israel, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom implies some cultural barrier to revision of the rules to benefit narrow partisan interests. Now consider a system which does have institutional barriers to amendment, like the United States. For all eight, homozygote knockout mice presented similar phenotypes as affected humans, and heterozygotes showed a milder but detectable phenotype S5 Table. The magnitude of the heterozygote effect of these mutations in humans is unclear, but the finding with knockout mice makes it plausible that there exists a very small fitness decrease in heterozygotes in humans as well, potentially not enough to have been recognized in clinical investigations but enough to have a marked impact on the allele frequencies of the disease mutations.

To investigate the population genetics of human disease, we focused on mutations that cause Mendelian, recessive disorders that lead to early death or completely impaired reproduction. We sought to understand to what extent the frequencies of these mutations fit the expectation based on a simple balance between the input of mutations and the purging by purifying selection, as well as how other mechanisms might affect these frequencies.

Many studies implicitly or explicitly compare known disease allele frequencies to expectations from mutation-selection balance [ 5 , 29 — 32 ]. In this study, we tested whether known recessive lethal disease alleles as a class fit these expectations, and found that, under a sensible demographic model for European population history with purifying selection only in homozygotes, the expectations fit the observed disease allele frequencies poorly: the mean empirical frequencies of disease alleles are substantially above expectation for all mutation types although not significantly so for CpGti , and the fold increase in observed mean allele frequency in relation to the expectation decreases with increased mutation rate Fig 2.

Furthermore, including possible effects of compound heterozygosity and subtle fitness decrease in heterozygotes will only exacerbate the discrepancy. In principle, higher than expected disease allele frequencies could be explained by at least six non-mutually exclusive factors: i widespread errors in reporting the causal variants; ii misspecification of the demographic model, iii misspecification of the mutation rate; iv reproductive compensation; v overdominance of disease alleles; and vi low penetrance of disease mutations.

Because widespread mis-annotation of the causal variants in disease mutation databases had previously been reported [ 23 , 45 , 46 ], we tried to minimize the effect of such errors on our analyses by filtering out any case that lacked compelling evidence of association with a recessive lethal disease, reducing our initial set of mutations to in which we had greater confidence see Methods for details. We also explored the effects of having misspecified recent demographic history or the mutation rate.

Based on very large samples, it has been estimated that population growth in Europe was stronger than what we considered in our simulations [ 47 , 48 ].

When we considered higher growth rates, such that the current effective population size is up to fold larger than that of the rescaled Tennessen model, we observed an increase in the expected frequency of recessive disease alleles and a larger number of segregating sites S4 Fig , columns A-E.

However, the impact of larger growth rate is insufficient to explain the observed discrepancy: the allele frequencies observed in ExAC are still on average an order of magnitude larger than expected based on a model with a fold larger current effective population size than the one initially considered [ 25 ] S4 Fig.

In turn, population substructure within Europe would only increase the number of homozygotes relative to what was modeled in our simulations through the Wahlund effect [ 49 ] and expose more recessive alleles to selection, thus decreasing the expected allele frequencies and exacerbating the discrepancy that we report. Except for the mean mutation rate now set to 2. The observed mean frequency remains significantly above what those predicted and qualitative conclusions are unchanged S4 Fig , column F.

Another factor to consider is that for disease phenotypes that are lethal very early on in life, there may be partial or complete reproductive compensation e. This phenomenon would decrease the fitness effects of the recessive lethal mutations and could therefore lead to an increase in the allele frequency in data relative to what we predict for a selection coefficient of 1.

There are no reasons, however, for this phenomenon to correlate with the mutation rate, as seen in Fig 2B. The other two factors, overdominance and low penetrance, are likely explanations for a subset of cases.

Regardless, it is known that disease mutations in this gene can complement one another [ 10 , 11 ] and that modifier loci in other genes also influence their penetrance [ 11 , 14 ]. Consistent with variable penetrance, Chen et al. These observations make it plausible that, in a subset of cases particularly for CFTR , the high frequency of deleterious mutations associated with recessive, lethal diseases are due to genetic interactions that modify the penetrance of certain recessive disease mutations.

It is hard to assess the importance of this phenomenon in driving the general pattern that we observe, but two factors argue against it being a sufficient explanation for our findings at the level of single sites.

First, when we removed mutations in CFTR and 12 in DHCR7 , the two genes that were outliers at the gene level Fig 3 ; S4 Table and for which there is evidence of incomplete penetrance [ 24 ], the discrepancy between observed and expected allele frequencies is barely impacted S5 Fig.

Moreover, there is no obvious reason why the degree of incomplete penetrance would vary systematically with the mutation rate of a site, as observed Fig 2B. Instead, it seems plausible that there is an ascertainment bias in disease allele discovery and mutation identification [ 52 , 54 , 55 ].

Therefore, those mutations that have been identified to date are likely the ones that are segregating at higher frequencies in the population. Moreover, mutation-selection balance models predict that the frequency of a deleterious mutation should correlate with the mutation rate. Together, these considerations suggest that disease variants of a highly mutable class, such as CpGti, are more likely to have been mapped and that the mean frequency of mapped mutations will tend to be only slightly above all disease mutations in that class.

In contrast, less mutable disease mutations are less likely to have been discovered to date, and the mean frequency of the subset of mutations that have been identified may tend to be far above that of all mutations in that class. To quantify these effects, we modeled the ascertainment of disease mutations both analytically and in simulations. A large proportion of recessive Mendelian disease mutations were identified in inbred populations, likely because inbreeding leads to an excess of homozygotes compared to expected under random mating, increasing the probability that a recessive mutation would be discovered as causing a disease.

Therefore, we modeled ascertainment in disease discovery in human populations with a plausible degree of inbreeding see Methods. As expected, we found that for a given mutation type, the probability of ascertainment increases with the sample size of the putative disease ascertainment study n a and the average inbreeding coefficient of the population under study F a ; in addition, the average allele frequency of mutations that have been identified is always higher than that of all existing mutations, and the discrepancy decreases as the ascertainment probability increases Table 1.

Furthermore, comparison across different mutation types reveals that a higher mutation rate increases the probability of disease mutations being ascertained Table 1 and S6 Fig and decreases the magnitude of bias in the estimated allele frequency relative to the mutation class as a whole Table 1.

In summary, among all the possible aforementioned explanations for the observed discrepancy between empirical and expected mean allele frequencies, the ascertainment bias hypothesis is the only one that also explains why it is more pronounced for less mutable mutation types Fig 2B. For a similar result derived from analytical modeling, see S6 Fig.

Parameters for this step of the simulation correspond to plausible scenarios for human populations with widespread inbreeding e. The last column in the bottom panel shows the fold increase of the mean allele frequency observed in ExAC in relation to simulations based on the Tennessen et al.

Mutation rates u per bp, per generation were obtained from a large human pedigree study [ 18 ]. One implication of this hypothesis is that there are numerous sites at which mutations cause recessive lethal diseases yet to be discovered, particularly at non-CpG sites.

More generally, this ascertainment bias complicates the interpretation of observed allele frequencies in terms of the selection pressures acting on disease alleles. Beyond this specific point, our study illustrates how the large sample sizes now made available to researchers in the context of projects like ExAC [ 23 ] can be used not only for direct discovery of disease variants, but also to test why disease alleles are segregating in the population and to understand at what frequencies we might expect to find them in the future.

In order to identify single nucleotide variants within the 42 genes associated with lethal, recessive Mendelian diseases S1 Table , we initially relied on the ClinVar dataset [ 56 ] accessed on June 3 rd , We filtered out any variant that is an indel or a more complex copy number variant or that is ever classified as benign or likely benign in ClinVar whether or not it is also classified as pathogenic or likely pathogenic.

By this approach, we obtained SNVs described as pathogenic or likely pathogenic. We considered effects in the absence of medical treatment, as we were interested in the selection pressures acting on the alleles over evolutionary time scales rather than in the last one or two generations, i. To evaluate the impact of treatment, we decreased s from 1 to 0 i. Because of the stochastic nature of the simulations, we repeated this pairwise comparison 10 times in order to get a range of expected increase in allele frequencies.

We observed only a minor increase in the mean allele frequency 2. This simulation procedure corresponds to a scenario in which there is an extremely effective treatment for all diseases for the past three generations, which is an overestimate of the effect and length of treatment for the disease set considered.

Variants with mention of incomplete penetrance i. Although these mutations were purportedly associated with completely recessive diseases, we sought to examine whether there would be possible, unreported effects in heterozygous carriers. To this end, we used the Mouse Genome Database MGD [ 57 ] accessed July 29 th , and were able to retrieve information for both homozygote and heterozygote mice for eight out of the 32 genes all of which with a homologue in mice S5 Table.

In addition to the information provided by ClinVar for each one of these variants, we considered the immediate sequence context of each SNV, to tailor the mutation rate estimate accordingly [ 18 ].

We focused our analyses on those individuals of Non-Finnish European descent, because they constitute the largest sample size from a single ancestry group. We note that, some diseases mutations, for instance, those in ASPA , HEXA and SMPD1 , are known to be especially prevalent in Ashkenazi Jewish populations, which could potentially bias our results if Ashkenazi Jewish individuals constituted a great portion of the sample we considered.

This approach left us with a set of mutations with a minimum coverage of 27x per sample and an average coverage of 69x per sample S2 Table. For sites with non-zero sample frequencies, ExAC reported the number of non-Finnish European individuals that were sequenced, which was on average 32, individuals [ 23 ].

For the remaining sites, we did not have this information. We therefore assumed that mean number of individuals covered for all sites was 32, and used this number to obtain sample frequencies from simulations, as explained below.

This subset excludes individuals with indications for testing because of known personal or family history of Mendelian diseases, infertility, and consanguinity. It therefore represents a more random with regard to the presence of disease alleles , population-based survey. We focused our analysis of this dataset on the 76, individuals of self-reported Northern or Southern European ancestry.

We modeled the frequency of a deleterious allele in human populations by forward simulations based on a crude but plausible demographic model for human populations from Africa and Europe, inferred from exome data for African-Americans and European-Americans [ 25 ].

To this end, we used a program described in [ 1 ]. In brief, the demographic scenario consists of an Out-of-Africa demographic model, with changes in population size throughout the population history, including a severe bottleneck in Europeans following the split from the African population and a rapid, recent population growth in both populations [ 25 ].

As in Simons et al. The original demographic model was inferred using a mutation rate u of 2. To incorporate what is believed to be a more accurate mutation rate estimate, we rescaled all demographic and time parameters in the original Tennessen et al.

We refer to this model as the rescaled Tennessen model and rely on it throughout. Negative selection acting on a single bi-allelic site was modeled as in the analytic models. Allele frequencies follow a Wright-Fisher sampling scheme in each generation according to these viabilities, with migration rate and population sizes varying according to the demographic scenario considered.

In our analyses, we tried to control for the methylation status of CpG sites by excluding sites located in CpG islands CGIs , which tend to not be methylated [ 42 ].

We note that the CpGti estimate from [ 18 ] includes CGIs, and in that sense the average mutation rate that we are using for CpGti may be a very slight underestimate of the mean rate for transitions at methylated CpG sites. Unless otherwise noted, the expectation assumes fully recessive, lethal alleles with complete penetrance.

Notably, by calculating the expected frequency one site at a time, we are ignoring possible interaction between genes i. These assumptions are relaxed in two ways. Second, when considering the gene-level analysis Fig 3 , we implicitly allowed for compound heterozygosity between any pair of known lethal mutations [ 8 ].

For this analysis, we ran simulations for a total mutation rate U per gene that was calculated accounting for the heterogeneity and uncertainty in the mutation rates estimates as follows: i For j sites in a gene known to cause a recessive lethal disease and that passed our filtering criteria S2 Table , we drew a mutation rate u j from the lognormal distribution, as described above; ii We then took the sum of u j as the total mutation rate U; iii We then ran one replicate with U as the mutation parameter, and other parameters as specified for site level analysis.

Because the mutational target size considered in simulations is only comprised of those sites at which mutations are known to cause a lethal recessive disease, it is almost certainly an underestimate of the true mutation rate—potentially by a lot. We note further that by this approach, we are assuming that compound heterozygotes formed by any two lethal alleles have fitness zero, i.

Moreover, we are implicitly ignoring the possibility of complementation, which is somewhat justified by our focus on mutations with severe effects and complete penetrance but see Discussion. Although separated, Manav and Archana remain married. Archana lives with her mother Sulochana and adopted daughter Purvi; while Manav lives with his parents and children in Canada.

Manav meets Archana when he visits Mumbai on business. He decides to complete the proceedings for divorce. Archana, unaware of her forged signature, is surprised when the subject of divorce is raised.

She still loves Manav. But Sachin asks Archana to agree to divorce Manav for the sake of his real mother, Shravani. Savita has allowed Sachin to believe that Archana was responsible for his separation from Shravani. Archana goes along with this, but Purvi is somehow able to delay the divorce by six months. Purvi and Ovi are caught in a love triangle with Arjun- the son of Manav's ex-boss and current business partner DK. Purvi and Arjun have fallen in love. However, DK announces that Ovi and Arjun are to wed.

Savita arrives in Mumbai and tells Ovi and Teju that Archana is their mother. Purvi and Arjun's love affair is exposed. Ovi still believes that Arjun loves her and it is Purvi who trapped Arjun. Archana tells Arjun if he really loves Purvi, he will have to prove himself.

Arjun starts living in a lower-middle-class settlement near Purvi's house. He begins to work as a car mechanic. He works hard to answer Archana's challenge. It is now revealed that Soham and Varsha are alive. They live in Patna. Soham is known as Vishnu and is a small-time criminal.

He comes to Mumbai on an assignment to kidnap Manav, but instead kidnaps Purvi. Manav and Arjun save Purvi. Soham is then arrested by the police. In the meantime, Archana approves of Arjun and starts preparing for his wedding with Purvi.

For Archana's sake, Purvi accepts and forces Arjun to marry Ovi. Arjun is very unhappy about having to marry Ovi and when he finds out about the agreement between Purvi and Ovi he becomes furious. Later, Ovi confesses about the agreement to Manav and everyone else as well. Manav feels very upset. Then the whole family comes to know that Savita had forged Archana's signature on the divorce papers. Manav confronts Savita and Sachin. Damodar also reveals how, 18 years ago, Savita lied to Archana that Manav wanted a divorce.

After finding out the full truth, Manav decides to live far away from Savita, leaving her devastated. Manav then fixes things up with Archana, and all three of his children apologize to her. She forgives them and they begin living together again. When Archana finds out that Vishnu is Soham, she approaches him, with the police behind her. Vishnu thinks that she is trying to get him arrested, so he puts a gun on Archana's head to escape from the police.

He then takes Archana hostage and flees. Manav, who doesn't know that Vishnu is Soham, tracks Vishnu down and shoots him. Later, when Manav finds out who he shot, he goes to the police and begs them to take him as a prisoner. Soham is taken to the hospital. Soham get to know about his real parents, but still hates and distrusts them. Purvi leaves Mumbai so that Arjun can forget her and start his married life with Ovi.

Arjun has become a successful businessman and Ovi is now pregnant with several complications. Arjun and Ovi appear to be a happy couple but it isn't true. Ovi constantly questions Arjun, whether or not he has forgotten Purvi. Later, Arjun goes to Kolkata for business purposes and to find Dr. Onir Dutt, who is a renowned Gynaecologist and the only doctor who is capable of treating Ovi.

He finds the doctor and calls Ovi to come to Kolkata for her treatment. Ovi is accompanied by Archana and they arrive at Kolkata. Ovi dislikes Dr. Onir and refuses to get treatment from him. On the occasion of Durga Puja, Archana happens to meet Purvi who is also pregnant. It is now revealed that six months before, Purvi went to Kolkata and met Dr. They became friends and soon got married. This shocks Archana. Arjun and Ovi also come to know about Purvi when they arrive at Dr.

Onir's home for dinner. Ovi thinks that Arjun is having an affair with Purvi. She gets angry and returns back to Mumbai.

Onir also refuses to treat Ovi because of her strange behaviour. At this point, Purvi reveals to Onir that Archana and Ovi are not strangers, but her mother and sister. Purvi leaves Onir's home and arrives at Mumbai. She does this so that Onir comes to Mumbai for Ovi's treatment. Ovi and Purvi's tests are conducted and then it is revealed that Purvi is pregnant with Arjun's child and this was the main reason of her leaving Mumbai. She married Onir only to give her child father's name and still loves Arjun.

Teju and Sunny have fallen in love with each other and now they are struggling to win Savita and Snehlata's heart respectively. On the other hand, Onir learns about Arjun being the father of Purvi's child and supports Purvi.

Ovi turns good after seeing Onir accepting Purvi, so Ovi also decides to move on with Arjun and their baby. Meanwhile, it is revealed that, Punni loves Mittal and wants to marry him.

Punni signs a pre-nuptial promising Mittal the Karanjkar house. On learning that Ovi has lost her child, Purvi decides to give away her daughter to Ovi. Later Purvi struggles to stay apart from the baby. Everybody rejoices that Ovi is a mother and are also equally sad about Purvi losing her child. Manav and Archana are happy to become grandparents. Meanwhile, Soham is released form jail and is brain washed by Balan to shoot Manav. Soham reaches Manav and Archana but is torn between his real parents and the parents who have taken care of him.

He realizes that he should shoot himself for being confused, but in a quarrel, the gun fires and shoots Archana. Archana is rushed to the hospital where she is said to be in coma. Everybody is heart-broken to see Archana lying in coma and hand over Soham to the police.

Arjun keeps her baby's name Pari. In Ovi's absence, Purvi feeds the baby. Punni sees this and informs Ovi. This makes Ovi angry and she warns Purvi to stay away from her daughter.

Arjun is shocked to hear this. While changing the babies, Mittal takes a video and is now threatening Onir that he would show this video in the court and push him inside the bars for human trafficking as a revenge when Onir accused Mittal that he was doing human organ trafficking in his hospital with a doctor.

Punni also seizes the video CDs from Mittal to succumb the property of her grandmother for Mittal because of the agreement. Mittal tells Punni to get back the CDs. In the court, wrong CD is played and Onir is saved. It is revealed that Onir destroyed the CD in Punni's absence. On Mahashivratri, a grand function is held. Varsha is released from jail and comes to Karanjkar house but Sulochana removes her out of the house. Onir and Arjun drink Bhang. In subconsciousness, Onir proposes his love to Purvi which makes her shocked.

In the report, it is proved that Pari is Arjun's daughter and Mittal loses the case. Varsha gets a job and stays in Sulochana's chawl. Onir gets Mittal arrested in the case of human organ trafficking.

This worries Purvi about what would happen if Mittal came to know about her and Arjun's past. Soham is released from jail but doesn't know who bailed him out. Punni sends the CD to Arjun and finally he comes to know the truth. Punni tells Purvi to get Sulochana's sign on property papers where she is transferring the property to Mittal. Manav asks Sachin to check as to who bailed Soham out; it is later revealed that Archana signed the bail papers before she went into coma.

Purvi gets Sulochana's sign on the property papers but later tears them and hands them over to Punni. Punni threatens Purvi that she would tell everybody the truth about Pari, Purvi tells Punni that she would tell everybody herself.

Punni calls Ovi, Arjun and Purvi to a hotel where Arjun and Purvi reach earlier, when Ovi reaches there, she finds out while overhearing their conversation that Pari is not her daughter, but it's actually Purvi and Arjun's. On her first anniversary, Ovi gets drunk and reveals the truth to the family members.

By , more than half of the largest financial firms in the country were involved in the nonconventional MBS market. About 45 percent of the largest firms had a large market share in three or four nonconventional loan market functions originating, underwriting, MBS issuance, and servicing.

Moreover, because large firms like Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns were engaged in multiple sectors of the MBS market, they had high incentives to misrepresent the quality of their mortgages and securities at every point along the lending process, from originating and issuing to underwriting the loan.

Fligstein and Roehrkasse make the case that the integrated structure of financial firms into multiple sectors of the MBS industry, alongside the marketplace dynamics of increased scarcity and competition for new mortgages, led firms to engage in fraud. FOMC members set monetary policy and have partial authority to regulate the U.

Fligstein and his colleagues find that FOMC members were prevented from seeing the oncoming crisis by their own assumptions about how the economy works using the framework of macroeconomics. In contrast, Nietzsche views that an overman must be able to accept these limitations and can face it in the eternal recurrence. Nietzsche must have felt that the western culture had put less and less significance on artistic creativity and passion that mental and spiritual power which create beauty in life have fewer and fewer places in the modern society.

Emotion is one of the attributes of Dionysus and is also one of the entities which Nietzsche defended. He views that emotion is natural. Its repression or suppression is psychologically disastrous. This also includes sexuality. He attacked Christianity for its traditional value that places bars on emotion and impulse and this is viewed by Nietzsche as self-denying. He disagrees on inhibiting and thwarting human own nature. The world with no passion and emotion will be an unnatural one and this special property, among others, of human that differs from other animals will be lost. Nietzsche might or might not consider himself an overman but he surely determined to be a means or bridge who brings closer to reality an emergence of an overman.

Odysseus and some of his crew went to talk to the cyclops but the one eyed giant had other things in mind. The men likely would not have held their beach, had Odysseus been a weaker leader. When they get back to the boat and Odysseus yells out to the Cyclopes his name.

Which means a harder journey for Odysseus and his men because Polyphemus is Poseidon's son. In this book Odysseus shows his pride when he yells from the boat and almist gets him and his men killed. In the movie Odysseus pride is most shown when he blames her situation solely on his men.

In this particular section, the two most frequent figures are, of course, Odysseus, and Polyphemus; a cyclops. Unfortunately, the meeting of this creature is not very pretty.

After scouting the land for everything they needed, all shipmates were ready to leave, when Odysseus objected, "I wished to see the cave man,". That same night, Telemachus returns from searching for news of his father as a party of Penelope's suitors lie in wait to kill the prince.

Athene thwarts the suitors' plot and changes herself into a swineherd to greet Telemachus and direct him to Eumaeus' hut. Ulysses cannot restrain himself from revealing his identity to his son and planning his attack on Penelope's suitors.

At dusk the next day, Ulysses, dressed as a beggar, arrives at the castle where the suitors abuse him. Still disguised, Ulysses tells Penelope pleasing stories about Ulysses and convinces her to hold an archery contest to decide who her next husband will be. While Penelope announces the contest to the suitors, Ulysses arms himself. None of the suitors are able to string Ulysses' bow. Ulysses shoots an arrow through twelve axe rings and reveals himself.

Ulysses, Telemachus, Eumaeus and the neatherd kill the suitors, and Ulysses claims his wife. He promises to teach Telemachus everything his son needs to know because Ulysses is home now.

He disguises himself as an old beggar and visits his swineherd, Eumaeus, who is kind to him. The three men plot to retake the castle. Disguised as the beggar, Ulysses talks to Penelope, saying he knew her husband, who wanted her to choose a suitor who can string his bow. She follows the advice, holds an archery contest, and, when none can bend the bow, Ulysses appears, strings the bow easily, and shoots a single arrow through all the lined-up targets.

The suitors attack; Ulysses arrows most of them and, with his cohorts, kills the rest in hand-to-hand combat. Home at last, Ulysses reclaims his kingdom and rejoins his queen. As Frank and Hazel sat in the Fields of Asphodel , Frank said she deserved Elysium , and he was angry her life was taken away from her at such a young age. Hazel and Frank went to most places together. When Nico sublely threatened Frank, Hazel laced her hand in his, making Nico's heart ache at his comfortable they looked together. She proceeds to tell him how he scared her and gives him some nectar.

She kisses him on the forehead and tells him he broke her heart. Fast-forward to the end. Hazel and Frank meet Apollo in a coffee shop before they have to rouse the legion. They leave hand in hand. In The Tower of Nero , the two work on rebuilding New Rome together and are the most efficient and respected pair of praetors to ever run the Twelfth Legion.

The two also enjoy the fact that Hazel's curse appears to officially be broken and she can use her powers to create gold and jewels without any trouble. Annabeth , a good friend.

Annabeth quickly befriended Frank and trusted him to watch Leo after only knowing him for a few seconds. After Annaveth heard how Frank turned into a koi, she couldn't look at him the same again without thinking of him as a koi.

When the Argo II arrived in Charleston, Frank went to Annabeth's cabin and asked her to help him take of Chinese handcuffs, showing that Frank trusted Annabeth not to make fun of him. Annabeth was pleasantly surprised by the visit, thinking he was the least likely to come visit her, and she felt honored-she had a soft spot for people seeking knowledge and liked that he trusted her.

Annabeth also knew that Frank was embarrassed after Leo kept teasing him, and she knew he didn't want to be a laughingstock. Frank was impressed when Annabeth pulled up a 3D model of Chinese handcuffs, and Annabeth explained to him how to escape them. Frank almost told Annabeth about his lifeline, but the dinner bell rang. Frank and Nico met before the events of The Son of Neptune. Frank is not uneasy around Nico like the other kids at Camp Jupiter. Frank didn't know much about him though, or about his past. Frank even thought his father was cool, and knew it wasn't his fault that he ran the underworld. On Nico's end, Nico was amused by the son of Mars and smiled when he saw him, since he wasn't nervous around him like the others. In The Mark of Athena , Frank wanted to save Nico from the bronze jar and was worried about how long he would survive in the jar.

His anger subsided when it was revealed that he used to play Mythomagic too, however. And when he was turned into a plant by Triptolemus , he demanded that he be turned back, calling him "his friend", and slammed the minor god into a wall for not healing Hazel or Nico faster. Later, Nico called Frank brave for killing all of the Katobleps in Venice, but became shocked when he found out he actually killed all of them. Frank was worried about Nico after he became quieter after the incident, mentioning to Hazel that he doesn't think he plays well with others.

Hazel thanked Frank for trying to be his friend, since he isn't easy to like, and Frank said he is used to people who aren't easy to like after being with his grandmother for years. Later, Frank trusted Nico to guide him into the house of hades. Nico and Frank fought off hordes of monsters together in the House of Hades , and it was because of Nico that Frank was promoted to Praetor , when Nico encouraged Jason to promote him.

Nico later told Frank he had an arrow in his arm. In The Blood of Olympus , Nico regarded Frank as one of his friends, not overlooking him like others, and when he found out he may die, he felt like he was back in the Bronze Jar again. Later, when he was back at Camp Half-Blood , Nico was the only person not angry at Frank for aiding Leo in his suicidal plan, since he knew that was exactly what Leo would've done. Frank visited Nico and Hazel in their cabin, and thanked Nico.

Nico said Frank did great, and it was an honor to quest with him. He thought that it was a good sign he could talk openly about his lifeline. Nico told Frank that he wasn't close to death and he had many more adventures ahead of him.

He told him to be good to Hazel, and that he was a good guy, though secretly jealous of his happy relationship. Frank asked Nico if he wanted to come to Camp Jupiter with them, and that he would always have a place in New Rome but Nico said he would stay at Camp, and that he would visit. Frank was flustered after he said that, and left. Hazel then chastised Nico for teasing him about that.

Frank and Jason first met in The Mark of Athena , and when Jason heard how Frank heard how he killed Alcyoneus , Jason questioned how he killed Alcyoneus without the help of a god, and Frank said he did by pushing him into Canada.

Frank became very mad at Jason when he was opposed to rescuing Nico di Angelo , but was more angry at Leo than Jason. Later, Jason wanted Frank to come with him to find a map in Charleston, because he was a son of Mars , and ghosts are bound to serve him.

Frank and Jason cooperated well and they both flew in the sky and flew to Fort Sumter, helping defeat the Romans. While Jason went to Dalmatia , he trusted Frank enough to make him in charge of defending the ship. Frank also listened to Jason when he ordered him to go get Coach Hedge , and when he did, Jason gave Frank an appreciative nod. Jason ended up promoting Frank to Praetor so the ghosts could listen to him, respecting him as a leader.

Jason also listened to Frank when he ordered him to move legionnaires across the pit. After it was over, Jason calmly told Frank he was on fire. That night, Jason spoke to Frank in hushed tones, telling him advice on being praetor. Jason and Frank also lead a backup charge into the Parthenon to defeat the Gigantes.

Frank and Jason kept in contact with each other, meeting for monthly Argo II reunion parties. Leo , his friend and former rival. Frank and Leo met in The Mark of Athena and had a rocky start. They got into a fight in the Atlantic when Frank was reluctant to leave Leo alone with Hazel. While Leo and Hazel were talking about her past together in a shared memory, Leo awakens to find out that the ship as been attacked. After he and Frank fall overboard, they wake up in a cave underwater.

Frank wasn't happy that he was stuck with Leo, and told Leo he obviously cared more about this ship than his friends due to his carelessness. Leo realized that Frank was angry about him holding hands with Hazel, and apologized, saying they were in a blackout in order to find his connection with Sammy.

Frank became curious, and Leo said that he was Sammy's great great grandson, telling Frank the whole story in the process. Leo also told Frank that he was not trying to date Hazel, even though his feelings were complicated. They both decided to make a plan to get out of the cave since Frank couldn't shapeshift, and Leo tried to free them with fire, making Frank freak out. Leo soon realized that Frank had a bad experience with fire in the past, just like him.

In order to ensure Frank that he wasn't alone in his bad relationship with fire, he told him how his mom died. Frank almost told him about his lifeline until Bythos interrupted. Frank and Leo's relationship was better after that, but still rocky.

While in Rome, Leo insulted Frank by saying he needed to be skinnier to get through a hole in a wall. Leo and Frank also argued about what Frank should shapeshift into until Hazel told them to stop. When the two were alone, Frank said that Hazel said that Leo knew about his lifeline, and Leo reassured him that he wouldn't do anything to hurt him.

Frank told Leo about his grandmother and the fire, and how his mom died, making Leo realize they both lost their moms to a fire. Leo told Frank the whole story about how his mom died, and Frank said even though he hates when people say "I'm sorry about your mom", he said that to Leo, and he accepted it.

Leo reassured Frank that they all have weaknesses, with Leo being tragically funny and good looking, and they both agreed to look for Hazel. Leo ended up using his fortune cookie from Nemesis to save Frank and Hazel. Frank mentioned how his aunt and Leo's grandma would get along, and Leo felt bad that he missed Canada day, and asked Frank if he should have gotten him a present.

As for Frank, he revealed that in his head, Ares and Mars told him to kill Leo, and Ares told him to retaliate to every insult he gave him, since he teased him a lot. Leo's comment that he made in Atlanta about Leo being worth two or three Frank's hit too close to home for him, and it hurt his feelings.

Leo also has a tendency to annoy Frank a lot with his stupid jokes, and when Leo made a pun about the town of Split, Frank groaned and asked Jason to leave him in Croatia. The two sometimes agreed with each other, like when they both thought there were too many monsters in Croatia. Frank also wanted to be there for all of his friends, including Leo, since Annabeth was gone.

After Leo returned from Ogygia , Frank was happy to see him and patted him on the back so hard he winced. Frank was amazed how Leo's tension with Hazel had disappeared. Frank was relieved that Leo wasn't hitting on her, but he was worried about him, even after their differences, and after all they'd been through, he didn't want his heart broken. Leo later asked Frank for his firewood, and though Frank was reluctant, he gave it to him, and trusted Leo. Leo ended up making a fireproof bag for Frank's firewood, and Leo wanted to light it to test it.

Even though Frank was skeptical, he realized he trusted Leo after he saved him in Rome. The bag ended up being fireproof, and Frank was grateful to Leo and thanked him, even though it seemed inadequate after what he had done for him.

Leo accepted it and said he was his best buddy. Later, Leo told Hazel he was happy for her and Frank, and hoped they would be happy. Leo also said Frank had moves and would be alright. Frank cried and hugged both Leo and Hazel, which Leo was weirded out by. Leo asked if he was in agreement, and Frank said he hated the plan, but he would do it. The next day, Frank gave Leo the Pylosian Mint and told him not to break it.

Leo joked about how not breaking deadly poison would've never occurred to him, and Frank told him to shut up and gave him a hug, telling him to be careful. Frank kept Leo's plan from the others at his insistence.

After Leo died, Frank was devastated and cried, tearfully telling the others. They were all mad at Frank until they couldn't be mad at him while he was crying, and they agreed that was a plan Leo would've done. Frank and Piper met in The Mark of Athena. Frank and Piper seemed to have befriended each other and Piper wondered what Frank thought of Camp Half-Blood , if it seemed alien to him, if it made him miss Camp Jupiter , or if it made him be unfair about the lack of acknowledging the Romans.

Piper could also tell that there was tension between Frank, Leo, and Hazel. Frank later became slightly miffed at Piper when she told him to wait to comfort Hazel, because she says she needed time to cool off, making Frank huff like an irritated bear.

When they went back to the ship, Frank said it was nice killing warthogs with her and Piper agreed, and gave him a hug, which seemed to fluster him. Frank first met Reyna when he asked to be let into the camp, and apologized for the actions of his ancestor, Shen Lun , for starting the San Francisco earthquake.

Whereas one fan might be dying to see Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar, another may be on the edge of his seat waiting to see The Shield in its first WrestleMania match. So, which matches are you most anticipating? Your answers to those questions may all be different, but let's take a look at mine. Here are my power rankings of all 10 WrestleMania matches. NOTE: These rankings will be based on a variety of factors, including buildup, hype, star power and expected match quality, among others.

They will NOT be based purely on the expected quality of the in-ring action. Perhaps the biggest issue with this match, other than it being a nearly criminal waste of Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes, is that it simply doesn't mean anything to anyone involved. While Arabella Figg had claimed in the Wizengamot court room to have seen the Dementors that had attacked Harry and Dudley in Little Whinging [5] , it was later confirmed that she had lied. It was unclear if she was unable to see the Dementors or if she was merely arriving late at the scene. After Morfin Gaunt and Bartemius Crouch Jnr's mother died in Azkaban, Dementors buried their bodies, which shows that Dementors are capable of physical labour, such as grave-digging. Also, Sirius escaped when the Dementors came to give food, another sort of labour.

It was stated by Remus Lupin that, if a wizard remained in close contact with Dementors for an extended period of time, a Dementor could drain a wizard of his powers.

This fact was not expounded upon, so the truth to this statement was unknown. If this was the case, however, it would make Dementors the only known being to permanently render a wizard without magic.

Lupin might also have meant this metaphorically, as severe depression, which was caused by prolonged contact with Dementors, could be really detrimental to a wizard's ability to cast spells. In addition to feeding on positive emotions, Dementors could perform their last and most dangerous ability: the Dementor's Kiss, in which a Dementor latched its mouth onto a victim's and sucked out the person's soul. It was believed that existing after a Dementor's Kiss was worse than death: as a person's soul was their true self, to be "kissed" by a Dementor was to cease to exist, and yet also remain.

It was unknown what effect a Dementor's Kiss would have had on a person who had split his or her soul through the use of a Horcrux. It was also possible that the soul was trapped inside the Dementor, thus the victim was unable to pass on. This was probably what "worse than death" meant. The only known named victim of the Kiss is Barty Crouch Jnr. From to , Crouch had been using Polyjuice Potion to pose as Alastor Moody , and had been teaching at Hogwarts in his stead; he was detained at the castle, awaiting trial, after his ploy was discovered, and it emerged that he had been working in secret for Voldemort.

He was subjected to the punishment by a Dementor accompanying Cornelius Fudge as a bodyguard. No one had ever demonstrated the ability to kill a Dementor, by Avada Kedavra or otherwise, implying that they couldn't be killed through physical means, but could only be driven away or temporarily kept at bay. One of the few ways to shield oneself from Dementors was by the very difficult Patronus Charm.

With sufficient ability, a single wizard could hold off dozens, if not hundreds, of Dementors with a single corporeal Patronus, as Harry Potter demonstrated during his third year at Hogwarts when he drove off a horde of Dementors seeking to consume Hermione Granger, Sirius Black, and Harry's past selves.

As the Patronus was not alive, the Dementor couldn't feed on it. Only when summoned by an experienced caster would the Patronus take the form of an animal significant in some way to the individual. While the lower level Patronus was more amorphous and ephemeral, corporeal Patronuses chased down Dementors and forced them to flee the vicinity. Since Dementors couldn't properly sense the less complex thoughts and emotions of a person when they took on an Animagus form, doing so allowed some, such as Sirius Black , to temporarily avoid feeling the effects of the Dementors' presence.

The effects of a Dementor's happiness-draining powers could also be resisted if one focused not on happy thoughts, but on obsessions, or other things that gave one strength without exactly making one feel better. For example, Sirius managed to avoid going mad in the Dementors' custody and eventually plan an escape by focusing on the fact that he was innocent and didn't belong in Azkaban, and later that Peter Pettigrew was at Hogwarts and that Harry was in danger.

However, this feat was mostly attributed to the fact of him being an Animagus who was able to temporarily avoid feeling the effects of the Dementors' presence in his animal form. Though clearly not a common method of repelling Dementors, the enigmatic form people took after being brought back by the Resurrection Stone appeared to function much like a Patronus , as the "resurrected" forms of Sirius Black , Remus Lupin , and James and Lily Potter were able to shield Harry Potter from the Dementors that Voldemort had stationed in the Forbidden Forest in And also, after Harry returned from the brink of life and death, he was so overcome with joy at being alive that the Dementors had no effect on him, showing that if a person was truly happy as he could be, the Dementors main weapon was rendered useless.

There may have been another, more common way of repelling a Dementor, aside from the Patronus Charm, as Harry Potter disagreed with Professor Snape on the best method for confronting one when it was the subject of a report in his sixth year. Probably one of them was reducing the effects and conditions of the habitat that Dementors preferred, which would cause them to be driven away. Other methods might include the use of Felix Felicis to increase a wizard's luck, or with the use of Occlumency to neutralise thoughts and emotions to keep calm and confident.

Both methods would eventually lead to the point that a wizard could easily cast the Patronus Charm to fend off Dementors. The mood-enhancing properties of chocolate were well known in both the Muggle and wizarding worlds. Chocolate was the perfect antidote for anyone who had been overcome in the presence of Dementors, which sucked hope and happiness out of their surroundings.

Chocolate could only be a short-term remedy, however. Finding ways to fight off Dementors — or depression — were essential if one was to become permanently happier. Excessive chocolate consumption couldn't benefit either Muggle or wizard. Dark Wizards couldn't commonly produce Patronuses. However, they did not need to do so in the first place, as they were like-minded in evil.

Voldemort even stated that they were natural allies. This did not, however, prevent Dementors from imprisoning dark wizards in Azkaban. The English word dementor is used generically to refer to any evil or fearsome creature.
